About The Blog

Through the use of world-class life sciences tools, capabilities and processes, Kenya will leapfrog older crime fighting techniques to enhance the capabilities to protect our biodiversity.

Using scientific procedures to examine, identify, and compare evidence from crime scenes, and to link the evidence with a suspect and a victim, which is specifically an animal or plant, it’s a sure way to enact progressive and stringent policies that would deter criminals as well as adopt modern technology that would assist the criminal justice system to effectively convict and grant appropriate sentences as prescribed in law to wildlife crime perpetrators.

Poaching is one of the most serious crimes investigated by wildlife forensics. The modern DNA-based molecular methods will aid in the fight against the poaching of endangered and protected species, and in the prevention of cruelty to animals. The laboratory will enable our continent to fight against poaching and offer services for all African countries especially those in the East and Central regions that are battling this new, dangerous and bloody trade.

Let’s all bridge the gap between conservation genetics and law enforcement.

"This new unit will be tasked with dealing with cases that present a challenge to the protection and preservation of our wildlife and ensure that such incidences are properly dealt with", Director of Public Prosecution Keriako Tobiko said during celebrations for the World Wildlife Day in Nairobi.

This fully-fledged Wildlife Crimes Prosecution Unit, that will be headed by the Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Kioko Kamula, has 35 Prosecutors who have undergone specialized training.

This team is expected to provide prosecutorial services for all offences committed contrary to the recently enacted Wildlife Conservation and Management Act, 2013. Officers drawn from the unit are also part of a team reviewing the new law on the Wildlife Conservation and Management Act and are expected to propose suitable amendments to facilitate its efficient application.
"The Kenya Governmnet wishes to reaffirm its commitment towards protection of our wildlife, which is our national heritage, and i am committed to work with all State and non-State actors in the wildlife conservation and criminal justice sectors to ensure that the law is applied against offenders.” Mr Tobiko said.

A working committee with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has also been set up to co-ordinate investigation and prosecution processes as well as conduct joint trainings. A standard operating procedure (SoP) manual for the prosecution of wildlife crimes was shared with all stakeholders at the second National Dialogue on Wildlife Crimes. Tobiko added that the new unit had already begun work on ensuring the Wildlife Management Act 2013 is in good shape to help protect the country's wildlife.

This is a welcome move to address the enduring problem of booming illegal transnational trade in wildlife.
